Sourced by AI Is Not the Same as Cited by AI

The crawl report looked healthy. The citation share did not. Digiday put the gap in print on September 22, 2026 with Comscore's Q2 2026 AI Intelligence numbers.

Tripadvisor accounts for 61% of travel sourcing by AI platforms but just 21% of citations. Same Digiday/Comscore package. Being used inside the model is not the same as being named in the answer the buyer sees.

I have sold long enough to know vanity metrics when they wear a new badge. A crawl hit without a citation is influence you cannot point at in a board deck.

Smriti Sharma told Digiday being used by AI is not equal to being visible in AI. Traditional SEO asked whether somebody found your site. AI measurement now asks whether the model used you, cited you, recommended you, or named your competitor instead.

Michael King of iPullRank told Digiday retrieval happens in two stages. First the assistant fans out into sub-queries and pulls a wide set of pages. That is sourcing. Then the model synthesizes and only attaches citations to the handful of passages it directly leaned on. Citations alone are a lagging, incomplete metric.

So what for a multilocation marketer. If your team celebrates "we got crawled" and skips citation share, you funded a vanity funnel. The fire is not more pages in the retrieval pile. The fire is whether your brand shows up when the answer gets written.

King's Digiday follow-through is the operator move. Measure the whole funnel: retrieval, citation, referrals, revenue. Original data, specific numbers, clear self-contained passages, and strong entity signals are what get attributed.

So what again. A location owner who only hears "AI is using our site" inherits a false win. Sourced heavily and cited lightly is leverage for a licensing talk. It is not proof you own the buyer's answer.

So what a third time. Cost of inaction lands on the next creator or SEO brief. Teams that only score crawl hits will keep shipping content that feeds models without earning the named credit that moves trust.

I still start with a business problem. The problem is not more AI visibility theater. The problem is a measurement funnel that stops at retrieval.

Cost of inaction is concrete. Leave the scorecard on crawl hits and you train the market to treat your domain as raw material. The next operator who reports citation share and referral lift owns the conversation you thought a log file would buy.

Every sales conversation comes down to one thing: trust. If your prospect trusts the map from retrieval to citation, they fund the next experiment. If they only see a crawl screenshot, fear wins and the budget stays stuck on vanity.

Keep it simple. Separate sourced from cited. Report both. Trust the Tripadvisor 61% vs 21% gap Digiday dated September 22, 2026.

The Bottom Line

Sourced by AI is not the same as cited by AI. Digiday dated Comscore's Tripadvisor split September 22, 2026: 61% of travel sourcing, 21% of citations. Sharma named the visibility gap. King named the two-stage retrieval funnel.

If your deck still treats crawl hits as the win, you are celebrating raw material, not named influence.
